Choose a thumbnail palette with a contrast check

A practical way to select a small colour palette and review whether the headline and subject remain separate.

01Choose roles before choosing colours

For a laptop tutorial, assign one colour to the background, one to the headline, and one to a small emphasis mark. A dark blue background, off-white lettering, and an amber pointer is a starting palette, not a recipe for better engagement.

Do not assign universal emotions to colours or infer buying behaviour from the palette. Your subject, cultural context, and existing brand are more useful constraints than an unsupported psychological percentage.

02Write a palette brief that leaves room for the subject

If the uploaded product is already blue, a blue background may make its edges harder to identify. Ask for a lighter neutral backdrop or a visible separation around the product before adding a decorative colour.

Instructional example

Palette exercise: Background #15243B, headline #F8FAFC, pointer #FBBF24. Use the pointer only to indicate the cooling stand. Preserve the laptop’s real finish; do not recolour the product to match the palette.

03Test contrast where the letters actually sit

A headline can look clear over a dark corner and disappear over a bright reflection in the same image. Inspect the whole word, not a single sample of the background colour. In an editor, temporarily turn the artwork to greyscale to see whether the structure still holds.

Then look at the small preview in the checker. If the subject and background merge, adjust their lightness or remove background detail. Increasing saturation everywhere often adds clutter rather than separation.

04Build a repeatable palette note

Keep a short note with your chosen colour roles, accepted text colour, and any colours that must stay faithful to the product. Reuse the note across a series, but review each image rather than assuming the next output matches exactly.

For a paid promotion, compare the exported colours with an approved product photo. A striking design that misrepresents the item is not ready for publication. Screen previews also cannot certify print colour accuracy.
