Vertical video covers: plan for crops and overlays

A reusable vertical composition workflow for keeping a subject and headline visible across different previews.

SocialThumbPro teamStudio workflow guides

01Treat each publishing surface as a separate preview

A 9:16 cover gives you vertical space, but a profile grid or recommendation panel may show a different crop. Do not assume a single safe-zone diagram is exact for every app, device, and account.

The SocialThumbPro vertical preset is labelled 1080×1920. As with other presets, inspect the actual generated file. YouTube currently recommends 2160×3840 for Shorts thumbnails; its official help now describes adding a custom Shorts thumbnail in desktop Studio. Follow the current platform instructions instead of an old workaround.

02Write a cover brief around the central subject

For a short cooking clip about folding dumplings, the hands and fold are the lesson. Place them near the centre and keep the headline away from the extreme top and bottom. A full-width banner over the fingers removes the most useful visual.

Instructional example

Vertical cover brief: Close view of hands folding one dumpling, central placement, clean kitchen background. Short headline “THE FIRST FOLD” above the hands. Leave breathing room at the top and bottom. No ingredients or steps that are absent from the video.

03Review a second crop before you publish

After downloading, check the vertical file and a square crop in the free checker. The square view is a diagnostic exercise, not a promise about any platform’s current grid. If the key detail disappears, reposition the composition in your editor or revise the brief.

Check the real publishing preview next. Interface controls, captions, and profile labels can cover the artwork differently from a crop. Test a draft where the platform permits it; a clean export does not prove a clean in-app presentation.

04Keep a small record of variants

Name local files so the target is clear, for example dumpling-cover-vertical-v1 and dumpling-cover-grid-v1. Keep the exact text and a note about the crop with the file.

The Library is a rolling ten-image history, so store the final covers locally. Do not label a cover “viral” or attach a view count unless a real published video supplies that evidence.

Key Takeaway

Design around the lesson, inspect alternate crops, and check the actual app preview before publishing.
