Desk-fan thumbnail: the actual brief, output and review

ReadA concrete layout exercise for choosing a subject, reducing clutter, and comparing thumbnail concepts without inventing CTR promises.
For a tutorial titled “Repair a noisy desk fan,” the thumbnail should make the repair recognisable. A fan, a visible loose screw, and a short phrase such as “STOP THE RATTLE” can communicate the subject. A shocked face plus unrelated flames promises a different video.
There is no universal CTR uplift that follows from a design change. Audience, topic, impressions, and where the video is shown all affect what a click means. Use design guidance to choose a testable concept, not to forecast a percentage.
In SocialThumbPro, keep the video title and description unchanged while changing the layout request. This makes the difference between concepts easier to describe. Generation can still vary other details, so inspect the outputs before treating them as a controlled comparison.
Video title: Repair a noisy desk fan Description: Show how tightening the loose base screw stops a rattling sound. Concept A: Large fan on the right, loose screw highlighted, dark neutral background, “STOP THE RATTLE” on the left. Concept B: Same fan and headline; move the screw detail into a small inset. Do not add sparks, injury, or a claim that the fan is broken beyond repair.
Ask someone to view the image at the checker’s small preview size and describe what they notice first. If their answer is a decorative badge instead of the fan, simplify the badge or increase the separation around the fan.
Then cover the text and ask whether the visual still represents the tutorial. A thumbnail need not tell the entire story, but it should not depend on a long paragraph to establish its subject.
Record the variant, date, and relevant platform analytics rather than attaching a made-up result to a design mockup. A result from one video is not automatically evidence for another channel.
If the platform offers its own thumbnail comparison feature, use its current instructions and evaluate the reported metric in context. Where you only have before-and-after observations, changes in audience or timing can explain the difference. Label those observations accordingly.
